4 Types Of Seeds And Mechanisms Of Action

You will get a complete guide on how to do seed cycling below and the benefits of each seed.

Flax Seeds: Nurturing Estrogen

The main components behind the flax seed’s mechanism are lignans, omega-3 fatty acids, and dietary fibers. These components play a major role in balancing hormones, especially estrogen production.

  • Lignans: Flax seeds have phytoestrogenic properties. They are found in plants and have a similar chemical structure to human estrogen. Phytoestrogen has weak estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects. In the gut, microbiota metabolized lignans into 3 metabolites enterolignans, enterodiol, and enterolactone. These 3 metabolites interact with human estrogen receptors and help in balancing estrogen production.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids are the main component of flax seeds. They are involved in physiologic processes and have anti-inflammatory properties. Omega 3 fatty acids are not directly responsible for hormonal balance but are indirectly involved in overall health and hormonal regulation.
  • Dietary Fiber: Flax seeds are loaded with both soluble and insoluble dietary fibers. Fibers are good for digestion, eliminate bad cholesterol from the body, regulate blood sugar levels, and maintain a healthy gut. A healthy gut microbiome involves hormonal balance by influencing the metabolism and removing unnecessary hormones.
  • Nutrient Profile: Flax seeds are loaded with nutrients like B vitamin, Magnesium, and Megnese. They are involved in physiological processes like energy production, bone health, and enzyme activity.

Pumpkin Seeds: Boosting Estrogen

  • Zinc: Pumpkin seeds are loaded with zinc. It can synthesize and release hormones like the female sex hormone that is estrogen. An adequate level of zinc is necessary in the body for hormonal balance and its function.
  • Essential Fatty Acids: Pumpkin seeds are rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They act as a precursor to many hormones. Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and are indirectly involved in hormonal balance.
  • Phytoestrogens and Antioxidants: Keep in mind pumpkin seeds do not have as many phytoestrogens as present in flax seeds. They contain antioxidants that have estrogenic effects and they also fight free radicals. Ultimately they reduce inflammation and contribute to overall health.
  • Nutrient Profile: Pumpkin seeds also contain magnesium, manganese, vitamin E, and B vitamins. They promote energy production, immune support, and enzyme activity.

Sunflower Seeds: Fostering Progesterone

  • Vitamin E: Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant and is present in sunflower seeds. Along with other benefits of vitamin E, it is believed that it has a positive influence on hormonal balance especially in the production of progesterone.
  • Selenium: The thyroid gland is responsible for producing hormones and selenium is the trace mineral accountable for thyroid function and overall health. So there is a correlation between them and adequate levels of selenium promotes the conversion of thyroid hormones.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium can play an important role in enzyme activity, muscle function, and hormone regulation. So magnesium can have a positive influence on the production and activity of various hormones.
  • Healthy Fats: Sunflower seeds have monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which are the building blocks of many hormones and essential for hormone production.
  • Nutrient Profile: Besides all these nutrients, B vitamins and zinc are also present in sunflower seeds. Vitamin E content is noteworthy and supports progesterone production in the luteal phase.

Sesame Seeds: Balancing Progesterone

  • Lignans: As we said earlier lignans are plant compounds and have antioxidant and phytoestrogenic properties. Lignans indirectly contribute to hormonal balance by influencing the estrogen receptors. Phytoestrogen present in lignans gives weak estrogenic properties to support hormone levels.
  • Healthy Fats: Sesame seeds have healthy fats like monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. Basically, these fats can promote hormonal production like progesterone.
  • Micronutrients: Saseme seeds contain micronutrients like calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin E, and B vitamins. They will ultimately regulate hormonal production and bone health.
